XMEN – APOCALYPSE

MAIN CAST: MICHAEL FASSBENDER, JAMES McAVOY AND JENNIFER LAWRENCE

IN A SENTENCE: The re-emerging Xmen must do battle with an all-powerful mutant to save the world and themselves (and the franchise of course).

THE GOOD: Watching what was the “next generation” cast turn into the oldies when the origin stories of some of the younger Xmen begin to unfold appealed to me. The casting is excellent and the attempts to rectify the damn confusing story lines of some of the previous instalments is appreciated. There’s plenty of action and effects to keep us all happy. By far the best thing is Fassbender who almost acts McAvoy and Lawerence off the screen.

THE BAD: Sad to say Oscar Isaacs was not up to his usual very high standard and was a bit hammy. He just wasn’t imposing enough to put the fear of God into anyone (stature was a problem for me). To be fair though, in an effort to be true to the comics they tried to retain Apocalypse’s look and it really hindered Isaacs ability to project menace.

THE UGLY: No effort to explain how the whole world was put back together again! (Except for Humpty Dumpty).
