THE KILLUMNEY INN

A quick call to the Killumney Inn on a Saturday evening in July to make sure there would be a table available and we were off and seated by 8pm. We needn’t have worried about getting a table because only one other table in the restaurant was occupied and on a summer Saturday evening that seemed a little off putting.

The menu was burgeoning with choices for all courses with every kind of meat and seafood represented, so something for everyone and the three of us got busy choosing our starters. I chose the breaded mushrooms with garlic sauce and my companions chose the potato wedges and the liver paté. The mushrooms were tasty if a bit sparse and the garlic sauce (mayonnaise) complimented them just fine. The potato wedges were a decent portion covered with bacon and cheese that went unfinished for fear of over powering the main course and the paté consisted of four piped swirls surrounded by a light salad and plenty of very thin toast.

For the main course I decided to try the lasagne with chips, while the other choices were the chicken curry with rice and the lemon sole on the bone with vegetables. The waitress made a point of pointing out there were bones in the fish, but my intrepid companion assured her she could cope. The curry had a twist nobody could identify, but it certainly added to the overall flavour and the lemon sole was tasty and exactly right. Unfortunately I felt the lasagne was a little undercooked and was a bit wary of what looked a little like a light gravy poured over it. My reservations were confirmed shortly after I got home (I’ll leave how to your imagination); partially my fault of course, I should have said something and asked for an alternative, but I’m Irish and we all know what a drawback that is in these situations.

All-in-all and despite my unfortunate experience, we enjoyed the meal and would return to the Killumney Inn in the future. A shout out to the staff who managed to avoid over-powering us with “everything’s alright, yes!” that proves to be what some establishments think is good service. They simply took our order, served our food and appeared whenever the table needed to be cleared. Well done!
